John asks, "What is Eyefinity? I've heard about it from AMD (formerly ATI) and I'm a bit confused about what exactly it will do. Could you explain it?"
Eyefinity is a technology from AMD that will allow you to connect up to six monitors simultaneously from one video card, and allow you to use all six of them as if they were one monitor.
To better understand what I mean, imagine that you have a typical multi-monitor setup: two LCD monitors side by side. In Windows, you have to configure each monitor separately, and using both monitors usually includes some sort of customized software configuration, because Windows doesn't treat both monitors as if they were one large display.
With Eyefinity, Windows will not see six different displays (although it could if you configured it that way). Instead, Windows will only be presented with one screen that has an incredibly large pixel count. In this scenario, a lot of problems with multi-monitor setups are fixed; for example:
- You can use the Windows menu bar across multiple monitors without any special software.
- You can drag and drop windows across multiple monitors, and resize them to fill the entire surface (all six monitors) without special software.
- Most importantly, you can play games across all six monitors without the need to configure Windows in a specific manner.
