What is the Best Headset for Gaming?

eZ writes, "I play a lot of MMOs (World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy), and my buddies and I do a lot of chatting over Ventrillo. I'd like to know what the best headset for gaming is so I can keep in touch with my friends without sounding like I'm talking into a sock."

To be honest, I've only ever had experience with two headsets: the Logitech Precision PC Gaming Headset, and the eDimensional AudioFX Gaming Headset.

If there is one thing I've learned about gaming headsets, it's that their microphones suck. They're basically the cheap micrrophones you get with every new computer, just strapped on to a pair of headphones. the same holds true for both the Logitech and eDimensional units - the microphones are little more than an excuse to call their products headsets.

The bright side is that both of these headsets have exceptional audio quality, especially the eDimension product - it faithfully reproduces 5.1 surround sound audio. Whatever you do, do not install the included software! I had serious headaches trying to figure out what was wrong with my computer for a week before figuring out that the included eDimensional software was absolute crap - stay as far away from it as you possibly can.

If I was going to recommend a headset today, I'd have to do it based on the headphones I currently use. Sennheiser has a fairly good name in the auto department, and I'm very happy with their IR wireless headphones (since I live in a big city, RF wireless headphones are a joke, so I stay away from them). So, with that in mind, I'd encourage you try out the Sennheiser PC350 G4ME Gaming Headset. The reviews of this unit are solid, and I've had some very good experience with the Sennheiser brand.
