What is the Best Blu-Ray Burner for my Gaming Computer?

Frank asks, "I'm building a new gaming computer and I'm wondering what is the best Blu-Ray burner I can buy for my machine that won't break the budget?"

Thankfully, when it comes to Blu-Ray burners, you don't have a whole lot of choices. Your interface is set in stone (SATA 3.0Gb/s), and it's generally going to be an internal drive. Unfortunately, your price is also set in stone at about $200 (unless you want to pay $700 for an external drive, but that's crazy-talk).

So, what's the best Blu-Ray burner for your gaming computer? It's pretty hard to say. They each perform equally well, and their expected lifespan is very similar. If you twisted my arm, however, I'd have to pick the Pioneer BDR-203 Blu-ray Disc Burner for one reason: it supports 8x BD-R burning, where the other drives only support 4x or 6x.

Keep in mind though, that no matter which Blu-Ray drive you buy, you're paying a premium for new technology. Plus, it's a technology that might not last - Blu-Ray penetration is significantly lower, and progressing slower, then plain DVD.

Still, it's a nice piece of technology to have! Especially for storing vast amount of data on an optical disk. Hopefully, Holographic Discs aren't too far around the corner!
