Jon asks, "I'm building a gaming computer and need to know what kind of speakers I should get for my system. Can you help me?"
When you're building a gaming computer, the question of sound quality doesn't often come up, but it's essential to a great gaming experience. That's why I recommend using a 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound system (using 7.1 surround sound only if your sound card supports it).
Modern games are built around a complete multimedia experience, from AI and graphics, to networking and sound. Most games offer a richer experience with a more complete entertainment system, which is why surround sound is essential in modern console games.
As for which speaker system I'd recommend, the Logitech Z-5500 THX Certified 5.1 505-watt Dolby Digital & DTS Hardware Decoding Speaker System is excellent for its price - at $370 you'll get a theater-quality sound system for a fraction of the price.
If you want to step up the sound experience, then a surround sound system from Bose might be the way to go, but you'll end up spending over $1000 for the privilege.
