Is the Logitech G13 Advanced Gameboard Any Good?

Mike writes, "I've been looking at the Logitech G13 Advanced Gameboard for gaming, and I'd like to know: is it any good? Should I spend my money on it?"

Before we give you a verdict on the Gameboard, let's take a look at its features:

  • 22 Programmable keys
  • LCD screen
  • Programmable joystick with two buttons

If you took the best parts of the G18 Gaming Keyboard and stripped all fot he keyboard features, but added more programmable buttons, you'd have the Logitech G13 Advanced Gameboard.

There are a few features we like about this product:

It's comfortable. The hand support pad gives you many hours of comfortable gaming, and the curved design of the keys gives you painless access to all 22 keys (we're not sold on the joystick though).

It's useful. This is essentially all of the cool features of the G18 Gaming Keyboard without the keyboard components. essentially giving you 22 more buttons to use in your gaming.

For its two good points, the G13 leaves us scratching our heads in a couple of areas:

It's pretty big for a keyboard desk. You're going to have a hard time finding a place to put this controller as it's an additional 5 inches across. Most keyboard drawers barely fit a keyboard as it is, and most computer desks only have enough space for a keyboard and mouse. We're not quite sure where this fits in your workspace.

It's questionably useful. While you can come up with a myriad of uses for having an additional 22 keys present, outside of an MMORPG this gamepad becomes questionably useful, after all, you've already got 102 keys on your keyboard.

It's pricey. You're paying $70 for 22 additional keys. Why not just get an external USB number pad for $20? You'll only get 16 additional keys, but you'll be able to use them and reprogram them (with the right tools, at least).

Overall, I can't recommend you go out and buy this product right this very second. If you think you have a use for it, then by all means buy the Logitech G13 Advanced Gamepad, but if you want it because you think it's going to improve your gaming, you're going to be disappointed.
