How to Stop Tearing on an LCD Monitor

Tearing on an LCD monitor can be a big problem with computer games. It occurs when the monitor receives more image data before it's ready to display it so you, in essence, get a screen that is torn between two images: the top half of the image is the first frame, the bottom half of the screen displays the newest frame.

You can avoid tearing by buying a low response rate monitor; however, if you can't afford a new monitor, or you still experience tearing, there's one thing you can do:

Turn vertical sync on in your game. I know, it's going to reduce your framerate to about 60 FPS; however, it will (or should) completely eliminate tearing, because the game will only draw a new frame when the monitor has updated, thus you only get new images once the monitor is ready to display them.
