How to Select a Mouse

Selecting a mouse for a computer isn't a very complicated decision; however, a gaming computer may need something special, especially if you're a professional gamer that's sensitive to the various nuances of your setup.

Optical vs Ball

There are two types of mice you'll see: those that are controlled by a moving ball and those controlled by some form of light. While the ball-based mouse may be cheaper than the optical mouse, don't be tempted by the low price tag: the ball mouse doesn't offer near the accuracy and durability an optical mouse does. Plus, the optical mouse will last far longer than other devices.

Optical vs Laser

There are two kinds of optical mice: light and laser based systems. Technically, you don't need a laser-based mouse: an optical mouse provides enough sensitivity for everyday applications and gaming; however, some people swear by their laser mouse.

A laser mouse offers one significant advantage: accuracy. Occasionally an optical mouse will misread a movement, causing you to look at the wrong spot. Laser mice don't suffer from this particular problem.

If you've got a tight budget, you'll want to stick with a regular optical mouse, while those with larger budgets will need to choose between cost and accuracy.

Wired vs Wireless

This is more of a personal preference than anything else, but there are a few things you should consider when buying a mouse of a gaming computer:

How much do wires get in the way? If you find that a wired mouse gets in the way of your gaming session, causing you some grief and aggravation, you may want to invest in a wireless mouse.

How often will you have to recharge? A wireless mouse is great if you don't want to worry about being corded down, but batteries wear out eventually and the mouse will need to either be recharged or have the batteries replaced.
