How Much Space Can DVDs hold?

Optical media is an amazing thing - a small plastic object can hold so much data that people can put hours of music and movies on them. Modern optical discs come in three forms: CD, DVD, and Blu-Ray. there used to be a third one, HD-DVD, but it has since been discontinued.

DVDs can hold a lot of information - up to 9 GB on one disc. Of course, that's with some caveats. You see, DVDs can have two layers on one side, and have data on both sides of the disc, giving you 9 GB of total space.

Generally, though, when you're dealing with writable DVDs, you'll only have about 4 GB of space available on one side.

Blu-Ray discs are something else - you can ahve upwards of 40GB of space on one side of the disc - that's a long shot away from the 400MB days of the earliest CD burners!
