How Much Should I Spend on a New Gaming Computer?

Jeff writes,

"I have a budget of about $2100 to spend on building a new computer, but I just don't know if I need to spend it all considering most of what I do is play WoW (although I would like to try F.E.A.R. 2). Any advice or even pointing me in the direction to head would be great."

One of the best tools you can use to help keep you in your budget is to actually build your machine using Newegg's wishlist feature. Just add your desired product to the wishlist, and you'll be able to keep track of not only the components you have but their cost as well.

I know it can be a bit overwhelming at first, but if you just break building your machine down into the essential components (processor, motherboard, RAM, hard drive, and video card) you should be able to put one together.

Since you're looking to mostly play WoW, with some other games on the side, I might recommend building an AMD machine with an ATI graphics card. the Phenom II 955 series gives you a great bang for your buck, and ATI has always performed well in the middle of the pack.

To get you started, here's a wishlist I put together around an AMD Phenom II x4 955 and a mid-range ATI graphics card: click here

That wishlist clocks in at around $1600. You can spend less on the monitor and the hard drive to free up some budget, and possibly spend more on a video card for better performance (right now it's a $250 mid range card, for FEAR2 I'd recommend something in the $300-$400 range).
