How to Make a Gaming Network

If you're building a gaming computer, chances are you're going to want to build some kind of a network to connect your computer to. If you're in an area that is not dense in RF interference then a wireless network should work for you; however, if you're in a RF-dense area, or you're putting together a network for a LAN party then you're going to need to pay attention to what you're doing.

If you plan on building a large network for hundreds of people, I'd recommend taking a course in networking. No, seriously - these things can get pretty complicated.

If, however, you plan on building a small network for you, a few computers, and a few of your friends, then listen up: the best method I've found for building a small network like this is to use the more expensive - but more robust - networking switch (instead of a hub).

Essentially your network is going to look like this:

Router: Connects directly to Switch
Switch: Connects to gaming server, connects to secondary switches.
Secondary Switch: connects to gaming PCs.

Why a switch and not a hub? It's simple: performance. Hub's, when used improperly, can cause seriously high ping times from packet collisions. Switches make things a bit more complicated when setting them up, but their performance outweighs the complications (in my view, anyway).
