John asks, "How do I build a computer that I can upgrade without worrying about its technology becoming outdated?"
When you're building a gaming computer with the ability to upgrade in mind, you generally want to pay attention to the technology used rather than the capacity of that technology.
If I wanted to build an Intel Core i7 machine, I would look at their top of the line processors and see which socket type they used (as of this writing it's LGA 1366), and narrow my motherboard selection based on that. From there, I would choose a motherboard that had a lot of upgradeable features:
- PCI-e slots for video card upgrades
- SATA ports for additional storage space
- RAM slots for additional memory (also making note of the maximum amount of memory the motherboard supports)
If you build a computer with the latest technology - but not the greatest products that take advantage of that technology - you can have a computer that will be upgradeable for years to come, and not break the bank in the long run.
