How do I Build a Quiet Gaming Computer?

Danny writes, "I'm in the market for a new gaming computer, but the one I currently have is louder than a freight train - all of the fans make it so loud that I usually wear headphones just to drown out the noise. How do I build a quiet gaming computer, and still keep it cool?"

Building a quiet gaming computer means building a very specific cooling system for your computers needs. You have several options for keeping your computer quiet:

Water cooling is possibly the best option as it's very quiet and cools much more efficiently than air cooling; however, it's a bit more complicated than sir cooling and requires more maintenance.

Use larger fans may seem counter-intuitive because you might think that the larger computer fans would be louder - but you would be wrong. Larger fans can actually spin slower than their smaller counterparts and still move the same amount of air. The slower the fan moves, the less noise it's going to make.

Replace your power supply with a "quiet" counterpart - like the Zalman ZM850-HP 850W Power Supply. It can provide up to 850 watts of power, and it's very quiet.

Beyond that, there's very little you can do to reduce the noise coming from your computer. You can try mounting it in an isolation box (just make sure you have enough air vents) but that's way beyond the scope of this article.
