Is 1 Terabye Too Much for a Gaming Computer?

Steve asks, "All I really do with my computer is game. Outside of the occasional web browsing and VoIP call, I don't really do much else on this computer. Most of my music is on an MP3 player or on CDs, and my movies are all on DVDs. So, I'm forced to ask: is 1 terabyte of data storage too much for my gaming computer?"

In shot I would have to say no. Having 1TB of storage isn't as much as you might think. Sure, you can have less than 1TB of storage and still have a very viable gaming computer, but the more storage space you have, the better off you're probably going to be.

That is, of course, you don't mind replacing your hard drive more often than not.

While having 1TB or more of data storage on a hard drive is a neat idea, in practice it ends up being quite a mess. Storing all of your digital goodies on that one drive - including your operating system - is just asking for trouble, because once the hard drive dies, it's game over for your computer (until you can get it replaced).

What I recommend is starting off with one or two hard drives - in the 250 to 500GB storage range, each - and then building your system from there. If you can, dedicate a smaller, but faster, hard drive to your operating system, and another larger drive to storing your data.

Then, you can add another hard drive to your system when (or if) you need it, and replace ones that die over time (without losing too much of your critical data).
